Support Staff: Mrs Henderson & Mrs Austin
Spring 2 Learning Overview:

Reading
As Readers in Year 6, children read a range of high-quality texts and extracts including those which span the wider curriculum such as non-fiction texts around the topic of World War Two, Evolution and modern poetry. This breadth of reading supports children in becoming enthusiastic, thoughtful and skilled readers.
Pupils develop fluent and confident reading skills, applying a wide vocabulary and secure understanding of age-appropriate texts. They explore characters, themes and events in depth, discussing their ideas thoughtfully and justifying their views with clear evidence from the text. They make inferences, explain how meaning is enhanced through language choices, and compare ideas across a range of genres.
Writing
As Writers in Year 6, children write for a range of purposes inspired by rich texts including : Rose Blanche – Written by Christophe Gallaz, illustrated by Roberto Innocenti; A Story Like the Wind – Written by Laurens van der Post; On the Origin of Species – Written by Charles Darwin; The Ways of the Wolf – Written by Smriti Prasadam-Halls; Shackleton's Journey – Written and illustrated by William Grill and Hansel and Gretel – Written by Neil Gaiman.
Alongside these are a whole-school Shakespeare project based on Macbeth by William Shakespeare. They write narratives in different forms, formal and informal letters, balanced arguments and biographies.
There is a strong focus on clear, engaging and well-structured writing. Pupils develop drafting and editing skills, take pride in presenting their work neatly in pen, and are taught handwriting and spelling explicitly, including the Year 5/6 statutory word list.
Mathematics
As Mathematicians in Year 6, pupils work confidently with numbers up to 10,000,000, developing secure understanding of place value and applying efficient written and mental methods for all four operations. They use their knowledge to solve multi-step problems, including those involving fractions, decimals and percentages, and make connections between them.
Pupils deepen their understanding of ratio and proportion, introduce simple algebra, and calculate with increasingly complex fractions. In geometry, they solve problems involving area, perimeter and volume, and classify and draw shapes with increasing accuracy. They also interpret pie charts and line graphs, using these to solve problems.
A continued emphasis is placed on fluency in multiplication and division facts, ensuring rapid recall and accurate application within more complex calculations.
Across all areas, pupils are encouraged to explain their reasoning, solve problems systematically and approach maths with confidence and resilience.
