Skylarks - Year 2
2026 - 2027
Teacher: Mrs Hall
Support staff:
Mrs Harvey & Mrs Burrows
Autumn 2 Learning Overview

In Skylarks team this year we will have Mrs Hall plus Mrs Harvey, who will be working with us for several mornings each week. Mrs Burrows will also join us each Tuesday afternoon and will work with small groups of children on a Wednesday afternoon.
As we move through Year 2 we will continue to review all the phonics that have been learned previously, but will now begin to apply this knowledge to our spelling as well as our reading. After several weeks of phonic revision we will begin daily spelling lessons, which are linked to our English scheme.
Reading
Reading remains a huge focus in Year 2. Your child will bring home a reading book each week plus a library book for you to share together. Please read with your child for 5-10 minutes each day as this is essential in supporting their fluency, comprehension and love of reading. While reading with your child try to discuss the books too: what has happened so far, what they think may happen next, who are their favourite characters and so on.
As Readers in Year 2 children read a range of high-quality texts, including A River by Marc Martin, Jack and the Baked Beanstalk by Colin Stimpson and Tidy by Emily Gravett. They develop confidence, discussing characters, themes and events while beginning to justify their ideas using evidence from the text.
Reading is closely linked to the wider curriculum. Children explore non-fiction texts about science, living things and historical events and read myths, legends and poetry. This breadth of reading supports children in becoming enthusiastic, thoughtful and skilled readers.
Writing
As Writers in Year 2, children write for a range of purposes inspired by rich texts including The Bog Baby by Jeanne Willis, Rosie Revere, Engineer by Andrea Beaty and The Great Fire of London by Emma Adams. They write narratives, diary entries, persuasive letters and create information leaflets.
There is a strong focus on clear, engaging and well-structured writing. Pupils begin to develop drafting and editing skills, take pride in presenting their work neatly, and are taught handwriting and spelling explicitly.
Mathematics
As Mathematicians in Year 2, children work with numbers up to 100 using the mastery maths approach. They continue to develop their understanding of place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and become more confident with written and mental calculation methods. They will explore fractions, measure, money, time, shape and statistics. Children will apply their knowledge through problem-solving and reasoning, developing fluency, mathematical vocabulary, confidence and the ability to explain their thinking.
